Description:
Aquatic perennial herb. Stolons few, floating. Leaves subcircular, floating, 3-10 cm in diameter, rarely larger. Flowers pale yellow on erect pedicels 2.5-8 cm long; calyx lobes spreading. Corolla with tube 5-6 mm long, lobes c. 1.5 mm long, rarely more. Capsule c. 5 mm in diameter, ovoid, more or less as long as the calyx. Seeds smooth.

Derivation of specific name: thunbergiana: named after Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828), botanist and student of Linnaeus, who collected extensively in South Africa.
Habitat: In pools and rivers.
Altitude range: Up to 1600 m
Flowering time:Sep -Mar
Worldwide distribution: Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Caprivi-Namibia, South Africa and Madagascar.
