Description of the genus

Aquatic herbs. Leaves simple and ovate or ± circular (in ours). Flowers in clusters at the nodes (in ours), 5(-8)-merous. Capsule developing under water, dehiscent.

Derivation of name: resembling the genus of water-lilies, Nymphaea.

Worldwide: 20 species, cosmopolitan.
