Description:
A densely caespitose perennial, base surrounded by glabrous, fibrous, often partly burnt, pale to dark brown, shining leaf sheath remnants. Culms 20–50 cm., erect, glabrous, nodes dark and subglabrous to bearded. Leaf sheaths glabrous to loosely hairy. Ligule c. 0.5 mm. long, truncate, ciliolate. Leaf laminae 5–15 × 0.2–0.3 cm., linear, involute, densely papillose to scaberulous on the superior surface, smooth on the inferior surface, scabrous along the margin. Inflorescence composed of 2–3(5) racemes, up to 20 cm. long, solitary along a short common axis, often branched at the base. Rhachis triquetrous, up to 0.4 mm. broad, smooth to slightly scaberulous, with scabrous margins. Pedicels 2–3-nate, 1–4 mm. long, triquetrous, scabrous, broadened at the apex. Spikelets (3.0)3.2–3.8 mm., oblong. Inferior glume very short to short, truncate, nerveless, glabrous, hyaline. Superior glume 2/3–4/5 of the spikelet, oblong triangular, 3-nerved, appressed hairy, hairs fine, slightly undulating, often capitellate, reddish brown. Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong, 7-nerved, appressed hairy. Superior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong acute to slightly acuminate, mostly very dark brown.
