Most of the surrounding areas of the La Rochelle Hotel are taken up by both open and more or less densely wooded park-like landscapes of the Botanic Garden with a wide array of planted trees, shrubs and herbaceous species, both exotic and native. The relatively high rainfall and numerous water features in the form of dams, ponds, streams and waterfalls, have created an evergreen, forested landscape with many Eastern Highlands species thriving.
Behind the hotel, a hillside of mixed Miombo woodland is a still largely intact and undisturbed but closer to the Hotel and along the Mbiza Valley road many alien plants have become naturalised, including some more unusual species such as Amphilophium crucigerum (Bignoniaceae).
