The Umvumvumvu River Gorge offers some shelter, shade and possibly moisture in an otherwise hot and dry environment. For these reasons it is possible to find a richer flora here than in the surrounding areas. Although the habitat has been somewhat disturbed by human impact, it is still possible to find unusual species, such as Cyclantheropsis parviflora (Cucurbitaceae).
Three different species of Bauhinia - B. galpinii, B. petersiana and B. tomentosa - occur in close proximity along the road, providing a beautiful display when they all flower simultaneously in February.
