Description of the genus

Annuals. Inflorescence an open panicle with some or all branches whorled. Spikelets dorsally flattened, elliptic. Lower glume short, up to 1/3 length of spikelet; upper glume as long as spikelet. Lower lemma with a short apical awn. Upper lemma thinly chartaceous, acute, its flat thin margins enfolding and concealing the palea.

Similar in general appearance to a Panicum and differing in the upper lemma enfolding the palea.

Worldwide: 2 species in tropical Africa

Zambia: 1 taxon.
