Exell, A.W. (1963) Irvingiaceae Flora Zambesiaca 2(1)
Trees. Leaves alternate, simple; margin entire. Stipules intrapetiolar, paired, large, folded around each other to form a cone protecting the bud, falling quickly and leaving circular scars. Inflorescence a terminal or axillary panicle. Flowers 5-merous, bisexual, actinomorphic. Petals 5, free, equal, longer than the sepals. Stamens 10, inserted below the disk; anthers 2-locular, opening by slits. Disk relatively large, fleshy, yellow. Ovary superior, 2- or 5-locular; each locule with 1 pendulous ovule. Fruit a drupe or a samara. Worldwide: 3 genera and 8 species in tropical Africa and Asia. Zambia: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
