Description:
Perennial from a knotty rootstock. Culms 40–130 cm. high, erect or rarely geniculately ascending. Leaf laminae 3–17 cm. long, (2.3)3–8(10) mm. wide. Panicle 6–14(20) cm. long, broadly ovate. Pedicels usually with a few long hairs. Spikelets 3.2–5 mm. long, ovate. Inferior glume (0.3)0.6–1(1.3) mm. long, inconspicuously 1-nerved, narrowly ovate, inserted close to the superior; superior glume 5-nerved, usually gibbous on the back, subcoriaceous to coriaceous, glabrous, rarely hairy, emarginate, usually mucronate. Inferior floret male, its lemma 5-nerved, resembling the superior glume but less gibbous, the palea ciliate on its keels.
