New book: Field Guide to the wetter (Zambian) miombo woodland

Miombo woodland

This two-volume field guide by Lari Merrett and Kaj Vollesen covers the wetter miombo woodland of Zambia and is based on field work undertaken in the Mutinondo Wilderness Area of northern Zambia.

This work comprises 1,022 pages and covers 1,634 species of plant. It is particularly rich in colour photographs. Although based on Zambia, it contains much of interest for other countries in the region. A review of the work may be downloaded from this page.

For further information download this flier or contact the author directly at larimerrett@gmail.com.

About the website

This site provides information about the flowering plants and ferns of Zambia. This is a sister site to the Flora of Botswana, Caprivi, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe websites, which together cover the Flora Zambesiaca area.

The principal contributors to the site are the late Mike Bingham✝, Annette Willemen, Nicholas Wightman, Bart Wursten, Petra Ballings, Mark Hyde and Meg Coates Palgrave.

As of today, Tuesday, 19 March 2024, we have 6,894 native or naturalised species in the database for Zambia. There are 29,063 images for 3,479 species, of which 3,420 are native or naturalised and 59 are purely cultivated.

The Site history page gives details of the latest additions to the site. There is also a Frequently Asked Questions page.

Flora Zambesiaca

FZ volumes

The Flora Zambesiaca project has been the principal source of information for our project, particularly the keys, descriptions and images. It has been an invaluable tool to enable us to identify the many plant specimens we have recorded and collected and has been one of the most important sources to teach us the botanical skills we have acquired.

Further information about Flora Zambesiaca can be found at this link.

The picture shows the much-used and now dog-eared volumes which accompany us on our field trips.
