The most important habitat is mavundu found on Kalahari sands. This tall, evergreen forest is dominated by the tree Cryptosepalum pseudotaxus. It is three storeyed with an impenetrable shrub-scrambler layer and a total lack of surface water (Fanshawe 1961, Cottrell & Loveridge 1966). West Lunga also supports considerable areas of Miombo and chipya and through the whole area runs a network of rivers and streams that are flanked by dambos, strips of riparian forest and swamp.
