Description:	See var. buchananiibuchananii for general details. This variety is distinguished by its very prostrate habit.
Type location:	Tanzania
Notes:	We agree with Burrows & Willis (Sabonet Report 31: 159, 2005) that the distinctly prostrate habit of this variety warrants retention.
Derivation of specific name:	buchananii: after John Buchanan (1855 – 1896), Scottish horticulturist, missionary, farmer and plant collector in Malawi, who became Acting British Consul to Central Africa. subprostratum: almost prostrate.
Habitat:	Montane grassland, often with Protea scrub and bracken.
Altitude range:	2000 - 2250 m

Worldwide distribution:	Southern Tanzania, northern Malawi and Zambia (Nyika only).
