Description: |
Perennial sedge up to 1 m high, forming tussocks from a woody rhizome. Leaves 50-90 cm long and 5-9 mm wide with basal sheaths dark red, scabrid on veins and margin. Inflorescence a slender, much-branched panicle, 8-50 cm long, green; axis and branches pubescent; upper bracts 2 mm long with awn 3-8 mm long; lower bracts leaf-like. Spikelets 6-20 mm long and 3-5 mm wide. Glumes pale green to pale brownish or greyish. |

Notes: | Although not cited for Zambia in any literature it is common in the forest patches on the Nyika Plateau in Malawi, including Zovo Chipolo, and it is therefore likely also to be found in the forests on the Zambia side, such as Chowo Forest. |
