Description:
Perennial herb, erect or scrambling up to 3 m tall, growing from a woody rootstock, glandular hairy. Leaves subsessile, stiffly spreading, elliptic to lanceolate, up to 30 mm long, minutely short-hispid to almost hairless; margins shallowly or deeply serrate-crenate, more or less reflexed. Inflorescence usually much branched, many-flowered; flowers, opposite to subopposite; pedicels 2–5 mm long. Calyx 5–7.5 mm long, shortly hispid, sometimes slightly 2-lipped with lobes irregularly crenate-dentate. Corolla white to pale pink or rarely purple-white to pink or magenta; corolla almost equally 5-lobed with a curved tube. Capsule ovoid to subglobose, 5–13 mm long, hairy.

Notes:
Derivation of specific name: abyssinica: of Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, where the type was collected.
Habitat: In grassland and along forest margins.
Altitude range: 2000 - 2200 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Nigeria, Cameroon, DRC, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia.
