Perennial herb with a woody vertical rootstock. Stems erect, slender, up to 45 cm. long, with several erect shoots tufted, somewhat zigzag at the apex. Leaf lamina very variable in shape and size, linear oblong, linear-lanceolate, up to largely lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 3–12·5 × 0·3–3 cm., largely acute at the apex, cuneate at the base, greyish-pubescent, more so beneath; petiole 1–3 mm. long. Inflorescences numerous, axillary, 1–4-flowered; peduncle 0–1·6 cm. long, greyish-pubescent; pedicels 4–9 mm. long; bracts 1·5–5·5 mm. long, subobtuse at the apex, mucronulate; outer ones greyish-pubescent, inner ones with hyaline margin.
