Description: |
Perennial or shrubby herb with several erect or ascending stems from a woody rootstock; stems to 1.5 m long, puberulous to pubescent or sericeous-puberulous (rarely subglabrous), usually with a mixture of short appressed and longer spreading hairs. Leaves dark green, sparsely sericeous to puberulous, densest along veins, often also with longer spreading hairs; petiole 4–9(12) mm long; lamina narrowly ovate or narrowly elliptic, largest 7–14.5 × 1.5–4 cm, more than 3 times longer than wide; apex acute to subacuminate, base truncate to shortly attenuate. Flowers in 3–15(20) cm long racemoid cymes, terminal and from upper leaf axils, usually dense but occasionally interrupted in basal part; peduncle clearly defined, 1–5(7) cm long; lowermost bracts foliaceous or not, upwards differentiated, middle and upper yellowish green, with broad distinct hyaline margins, elliptic or (usually) narrowly so, 12–18 × 2.5–4 mm, finely puberulous or sericeous-puberulous or sparsely so, with scattered subsessile capitate glands, distinctly ciliate; bracteoles similar or narrower, 12–15 mm long, with similar indumentum. Calyx subequally 5-lobed, 6–7(9) mm long, finely puberulous or sparsely so and sometimes with a few longer hairs on midribs, not ciliate; lobes lanceolate, acuminate to cuspidate, usually with conspicuous hyaline margins, with strong central vein. Corolla white or creamy white, with mauve lines on lower lip, 11–15 mm long, finely or minutely puberulous; tube 5–6 mm long; upper lip 6–9 mm long, slightly hooded; lower lip 6–9 mm long, broadly oblong, lobes c.1 mm long. Capsule 8–12 mm long, densely and finely puberulous. Seeds mottled grey and black, 3–3.5 × 4–4.5 mm, whitish sericeous-puberulous on edges, sparser on flanks, glabrescent. |
