Description: |
An often stunted, spreading shrub or small tree up to 7 m high, with gnarled divaricate branches often arising from near the ground; bark deeply-fissured, grey to black or brownish-black.Young twigs stout 1–1.5 cm in diameter, densely woolly. Leaves broadly obovate to suborbicular-obovate, sometimes elliptic-oblong, saddle-shaped, 6–23 cm long, thickly leathery, dark or dull grey-green and hairless above, except on the midrib and lateral nerves when young, densely whitish or rusty woolly beneath, midrib often bright yellow; lateral nerves in 10–18 pairs, often almost perpendicular to the midrib, not prominent or slightly impressed above, not or scarcely prominent beneath; margin entire or rarely undulate-sinuate; petioles 1–8 cm long, fairly stout. Stipules subulate-filiform, 1–2.5 cm long, densely hairy, soon falling. Inflorescences usually borne among or just below the leaves. Male flowers on peduncles 1–2 cm long, calyx lobes 5; stamens 5, creamy-yellow. Female flowers on peduncles 3–4 mm long, extending to 5 mm in fruit, pubescent, calyx 4 mm in diameter, scarcely lobed. Fruits ellipsoid, 3 × 2.5 cm, smooth, densely rusty hairy when young, yellowish when fresh, reddish-brown when dried. |
