Description: |
Geophyte; rootstock tuberous, 5–6 × 2–3 cm, napiform, producing a stem c. 1 cm long below ground. Leaves appearing after the flowers, produced in a rosette at ground level, c. 3.2 × 1.5 cm, obovate; flowering stems with scale-like leaves. Cymes 1–5, reduced to solitary cyathia on peduncles 1–2.5 cm long; bracts joined in a bract-cup 5 × 8 mm, longer than the involucre, shortly notched between rounded apices, whitish. Cyathia c. 5 × 4 mm, with barrel-shaped involucres; glandular rim c. 1.5 mm high, crenulate, white; lobes 1 × 1 mm, subquadrate, denticulate. Female flower: perianth obvious, 3-lobed, toothed; styles 1 mm long, with bifid thickened apices. Male flowers: bracteoles 1.5 mm long, puberulous; stamens c. 2 mm long. Capsule 4 × 3.5 mm, obtusely 3-lobed, smooth. Seeds 2 × 1.25 mm, ovoid, smooth; caruncle absent. The upper leaf surface and margins are densely covered with cartilaginous hair-like outgrowths 1-1.5 mm long differentiates var. lanatum from var. pudibundum which has glabrous leaf surfaces and margins crisped with crowded cartilaginous teeth. |

Notes: | Currently only known from the type collection and NCW1338 made from the type locality along the upper reaches of the Zambezi River. |
