Description:
Erect perennial herb with tufted, annual, densely leafy anddensely hairy stems up to c. 1 m tall, growing from a woody rootstock. Leaves (sub)sessile, overlapping, narrowly oblong-lanceolate to narrowly-elliptic or ovate, 2–4.5 cm long, sparsely to densely hairy above, paler, pubescent and glandular punctate beneath; margins rolled under. Capitula numerous, terminal, in few to many 3–15-capitulate clusters. Involucres 3–5 mm long and 4–6 mm wide, florets exserted. bracts several-seriate, purple above, woolly outside; outer narrowly ovate, from c 1 mm long; inner narrowly oblong to lanceolate, up to c. 5 mm long. Corollas narrowly funnel-shaped, 4–6 mm long, purple, darker in the upper half, puberulous outside or only the lobes. Achenes narrowly oblong-obovoid, 1.5–2 mm long, often curved, 4–5-angular, obscurely ribbed on the angles and more or less sparsely setulose; pappus of 4–7 broad shiny scales, 0.5–1 mm long and lacerate on the upper margin.
