Perennial herb, with numerous erect to trailing stems up to 1 m long growing from a woody rootstock; stems slightly flexuous, somewhat angled, pubescent on younger parts; leaves 1–3-foliolate (mostly 1-foliolate) and varying on the same plant; leaflets chartaceous to subcoriaceous, 4–8.5 × (1)2–5 cm, oblong, elliptic or ovate, glabrous apart from hairs on the raised nerves beneath; petiole 3–4 mm long; flowers (1)2–4 per axil, on a peduncle 3–15 mm long; calyx 12–20 mm long, pilose; lobes lanceolate; standard pale mauve, blue or cream-coloured with blue striations, 3.5–4.5 × 2–3(3.5) cm, moderately pubescent outside; pod 3–5-seeded, oblong-clavate, compressed, pubescent, particularly along the raised sutures, glabrescent; seeds black, 7 × 6 × 2 mm. |
