Description:
Perennial herb with several stems 0.4–1.7(–2) m tall. Stems not branched to sparingly branched, sparsely to densely sericeous to villous with white to violet hairs and with orange sessile glands, indumentum becoming more dense and glandular on inflorescence axis. Leaves lanceolate to ovate, 2–6(–7.5) × 0.8–2.2(–2.5) cm, entire, apex caudate to acute, rarely obtuse with a point, base attenuate to rounded, rarely subcordate-truncate, scabrous above and sericeous or pilose beneath with white hairs, usually with red to orange sessile glands; petiole 1–7 mm long. Inflorescence 5–25(–37) cm long, distinct, with 2-flowered verticils 3–15(–40) mm apart; upper bracts 8–15(–25) × 5–12(–16) mm, distinct in size from the leaves, imbricate, roundish, apex with a twisted mucro 2–15(–22) mm long; bracteoles 2–19(–22) mm long; pedicel in flower 2–6 mm long and in fruit 4–8 mm long, jointed close to the calyx. Flowering calyx greenish brown to purple, 8–14 mm long, 4–10 mm broad, densely to sparsely sericeous with white to violet hairs; fruiting calyx brown to purple, coriaceous, 15–20(–22) mm long, 11–15(–17) mm broad, splitting into two parts. Corolla 16–27 mm long, anterior lip dark blue to violet; tube white to cream; protruding part pilose with stalked and sessile glands; tube 8–13 mm long; posterior lip 3–6 mm long; middle lobe of anterior lip 8–16 mm long and 5–15 mm broad.Nutlets 6–8 mm long, pubescent, rarely glabrous; wing 8–10 mm diameter.

Derivation of specific name: apiculata: with a pointed tip, referring to the pointed tip on the apex of the inflorescence bracts.
Habitat: Grassland, wooded grassland and Brachystegia woodland.
