Description:
Sparsely branched perennial up to 200 cm tall. Stems violet-purple, hairy but not glandular. Leaves opposite, subsessisle, oblanceolate-elliptic, 3-10 cm long, rather stiff; margin crenate to somewhat toothed. Inflorescence of several globose or elongated, dense clusters, sometimes all contracted into one. Bracts and calyces violet-purple, hairy. Corolla, pale violet or blue; tube 6-12 mm long; upper lip shallowly 4-lobed, lower lip boat-shaped.

Notes:
Derivation of specific name: engleri: after Dr Prof Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler (1844-1930), German Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Berlin, who promoted botanical exploration in Africa.
Habitat: Unusally in wet grasslands and dambos.
Altitude range: 500 - 1900 m
