Description:
Perennial herb, growing from a woody or tuberous rootstock. Stems up to 50 cm, stiff, suberect or prostrate. Leaves linear-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate hairless; margins usually entire, sometimes incised, set with small bristles; reticulate venation conspicuous. Inflorescences axillary, 1-3-flowered, sometimes flowering profusely when almost leafless. Corolla funnel-shaped, 5-9.5 cm long, rose-pink or white with or without a dark pink or mauve centre. The rim of the corolla shows distinct mucronate points. Capsule spherical, hairless, leathery.

Derivation of specific name: welwitschii: named after the Austrian botanist, Friedrich Martin Welwitsch (1806-1872)
Habitat: On sandy soils in woodland and grassland.
Altitude range: 360 - 1680 m

Worldwide distribution: Sudan, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Angola.
