Description: |
Woody plant with stems up to 1-1.5 m long. Leaves mostly opposite; petiole 4-10 mm long; lamina 2-8 × 1-4 cm, green to slightly glaucous, usually obovate-elliptic to obovate-elliptic. Umbels 2-4-flowered, borne in axils and at older nodes. Calyx 1-1.5 mm long, saucer-shaped. Corolla glabrous; tube 2.7-3.2 cm long, dull red, generally with whitish spots, the head of the buds turning greyish-black; bud heads angled or narrowly winged; lobes 7-9 mm long reflexed. |

Derivation of specific name: | forbesii: named after John Forbes (1799-1823), an English plant collector and naturalist. As representative of the Horticultural Society of London he visited the Cape in 1822. He died on the Zambezi River in Mozambique the following year. |
Habitat: | In dry mixed woodland and bushland, occasionally in miombo and mopane, on a wide variety of hosts, commonly Acacia, Combretum, Sterculia and with an aberrant form occurring on Uapaca. |
