Description:
Trees or shrubs, terrestrial, epilithic (rock splitting), monoecious (both sexes on same plant), sap milky. Figs in pairs, or more together, in leaf axils or just below the leaves; basal bracts 3, lateral bracts absent, ostiole circular, with 3 ostiolar bracts visible (Genus Ficus, Subgenus Urostigma).
Leaf with basal pair of veins more or less closely following the leaf margin; the main lateral veins forking near the leaf margin (compare Ficus ingens). Leaf lamina(3)5(8) times as long as the petiole. Figs pedunculate.

Notes: Endemic status: probably more common than is apparent from the few collections.

Worldwide distribution: Throughout eastern Africa from Botswana and South Africa to Egypt and Yemen, Socotra, with an outlier population in Algeria. A few records in south-eastern Zambia.
