Description: |
Herb, up to 85 cm tall, growing from a short, horizontal, regularly constricted rhizome with fibrous remains of old leaf bases; roots slender and wiry with distant tubers; leaves 4 – 6 per plant in 2 rows, broadly linear, narrowed and sheathing below, attenuate above, 7 – 85 x 0.5 – 4.5 cm, glabrous with midribs prominent, leaf bases without reddish-brown stripes or spots; peduncle flat and narrowly winged above, up to 40 cm long, glabrous; inflorescence unbranched, up to 16 cm long, flowers sparsely arranged; floral bracts to 12 mm long, lanceolate; pedicles articulated below middle, 1 – 7 per node, c. 14 mm long in fruit; perianth whitish to pinkish; tepals 8-17 mm long, (3)5-7 veined; stamens slightly shorter than tepals, in two groups usually with 4 in upper and 2 in lower; filaments glabrous, shorter or about as long as anthers; style declinate, slightly exserted above stamen; capsule obovoid to shallow deltoid, transversely ridged, covered in remains of dry perianth; seeds irregularly folded, c. 1 mm across. |
