Description:
Slender perennial 0.3-1 m tall, with a straight woody rhizome, bearing weakly erect stems. Inflorescences sparingly branched, lax and drooping at maturity with glomerules of 2-6 spikelets.

Notes: EA Robinson: "the Nyika Plateau, and the Northern and Central Provinces of Zambia where it is not uncommon in suitable localities."

Derivation of specific name: welwitschii: named after the Austrian botanist, Friedrich Martin Welwitsch (1806-1872)
Habitat: Perennial bogs and seasonally wet grasslands.
