Description:
Perennial 1-3.5(-4) m with razor-sharp basal sheaths and leaf-margins; rhizome creeping horizontal; stems glabrous. Inflorescence of one terminal and 3─6 lateral panicles, single or double at the nodes. Hypogynium margin conspicuously ciliate, the lobes forming a cup holding the base of the nutlet.

Notes: Zambian distribution: "Widespread in the wetter parts of Zambia having been recorded from all Provinces except the Southern and Barotseland" EAR
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: Swampy ground, stream sides, swamp forest.
Altitude range: Up to 1750 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Angola, DRC, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Madagascar.
