Description:
Slender perennial, 3‒40 cm tall with rhizome composed of characteristic confluent swollen stem bases; stems with many white spreading hairs below but almost glabrous above. Leaf blades fine, short, dark green. Inflorescence with 3 spikelets, one sessile surrounded by 1‒2 or more stalked ones. Glumes dark reddish-brown or blackish, with paler midrib.
