Tufted perennial, the basal leaf-sheaths woolly and usually becoming fibrous. Culms 40–100 cm. high. Panicle 5–35 cm. long, ovate, loose or somewhat contracted. Spikelets 8–14 mm. long, tuberculate setose, rarely glabrous. Inferior glume obtuse to subacute; superior glume and inferior lemma obtuse to acute. Superior lemma bidentate with teeth 0.5–1 mm. long; awn 4–6 cm. long, including a column 0.5–1 cm. long; stamens 2; callus 1–1.5 mm. long, linear, obliquely pungent or asymmetrically 2-toothed. |
