Date of birth: 1882 Date of death: 1966 BiographyThe following biography was kindly supplied by Meg Coates Palgrave in October 2014: OB Miller came to South Africa at the age of 25 and was employed as a forester mainly demarcating the indigenous forests of the Transkei, apart from during the war 1914-18 where he served in France. About 1927 he joined the High Commission territories first in Swaziland and then in Botswana. He published a List of the native trees and shrubs of the Mukushi forests of the Bechuanaland Protectorate in 1939, and List of the native trees and shrubs of the Bechuanaland Protectorate (Oxford) in 1948 which was updated in Jl. S. Af. Bot. Vol. 18 1952. He was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1949 and awarded the I.S.O. (probably the Imperial Service Order medal). He came to Zimbabwe after his retirement in 1952 as a forest consultant in Bulawayo and acted as caretaker H.B. Dugmore’s property, which was presumably Besna Kobila because that is where most of his 774 records are from. His specimens are housed at SRGH and the Bulawayo Museum Herbarium. |
