Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs, armed with prickles. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate. Leaflets in (1-)2-12(or more) pairs, opposite or alternate, sessile or petiolulate, usually ± asymmetric. Inflorescence of panicles or of racemes borne at the base of new branches below the leaves. Flowers unisexual by abortion. Fruit a dehiscent, spherical or subspherical, glandular-foveolate, 1-seeded follicle. Seed ± spherical, black, shiny.

Worldwide: c. 250 species in America, Africa and Asia
