Erect or prostrate, annual or perennial herbs. Stipules well-developed with a downwardly directed spur; stipels 0. Leaves digitately 2-or 4-foliolate. Inflorescence spicate, terminal or axillary. Bracts prominent, paired, resembling the stipules, ciliate, gland-dotted. Calyx hyaline, ciliate, 5-lobed. Corolla yellow or orange-yellow, often striped with purple. Stamens monadelphous. Pods sessile, 2-15-jointed, covered with numerous barbed spreading bristles. Derivation of name: Named after Dr Johannes Zorn (1739-1799), a German pharmacist. Worldwide: 86 species in warm areas of the world Zambia: 6 taxa. |
