Tree to 25 m. tall, semi-evergreen or deciduous; leaf paripinnate, leaflets in 4−6 pairs; inflorescence brown tomentose; flowers borne on erect racemes, calyx 4-lobed, petals 5, conspicuous, mauve or pink; pod compressed, brown hairy, broadest towards apex, seeds reddish-brown. Derivation of name: Named after William Balfour Baikie, Scottish explorer of west tropical Africa. Worldwide: 5 species, all of tropical Africa rainforests except for our species, 1 species in the Flora Zambesiaca region, 1 species in Zambia. Zambia: 1 taxon. |
