MORELLA Lour.
Mostly aromatic evergreen or deciduous shrubs or small trees with terminal buds. Leaves entire or coarsely toothed. Bracts subtending several ovaries or solitary, simple and 1-flowered; bracteoles present, often forming a small cup around the base of the ovary; ovary usually covered with persistent wax-secreting papillae. Fruit drupaceous. Derivation of name: From the Greek: myrike, meaning fragrance. Worldwide: About 25 species in tropical and southern Africa and Madagascar. Zambia: 2 taxa. |
