Description of the genus

Minute, semi-submerged aquatics with emergent flowering parts. Roots 0. Thalli thin, linear to oblong. Budding pouch 1. Inflorescences 1 or 2 on each frond; each of 1 female and 1 male flower without a membranous spathe. Anther 1-thecous. Fruit 1-seeded. Seed up to 0.45 mm, spherical or ovoid, smooth and spongy.

Worldwide: c. 7 species in tropical and South Africa and tropical and warm America

Zambia: 3 taxa.
