Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, rarely exceeding 40 cm. Inflorescence a compact, dense, white (in ours), head. Each head consists of several rounded or ovate pseudospikelets; each pseudospikelet is composed of spirally arranged scales (referred to here as pseudoglumes); each scale subtends a flower. Perianth segments 0. Nutlet usually obovoid and minutely papillose.
