Description of the genus

Tufted perennials. Inflorescence narrow, rufous or tawny, with several racemes ± appressed along the central axis; racemes short, dense, the rhachis fragile; sessile and pedicellate spikelets ± similar. Sessile spikelets bearded with rufous or tawny hairs from the callus; lower glume rounded on back; lower floret a hyaline lemma; upper floret bisexual; lemma shorter than spikelet, hyaline. Pedicellate spikelet smaller than sessile, its upper floret bisexual.

Worldwide: 7 species occurring in tropical America, Africa and India

Zambia: 3 taxa.
