Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs. Inflorescence flowers solitary or in fascicles; axillary often on old wood; sessile or stalked; bracteoles 2, 1 basal 1 median. Flowers sepals 2, connate to form a bi-lobed calyx; petals 4, valvate in 1 whorl eventually spreading, free or somewhat joined; rather thick. Fruit clusters of monocarps, indehiscent. Seeds several; usually succulent; without aril.

Worldwide: 12 species in W and C Africa.
