Lianas, climbing or erect shrubs, or small trees. Stipules interpetiolar or intrapetiolar, free or connate forming a sheath, appressed, membranous or papery. Leaves opposite, rarely 3-whorled. Inflorescence capitular, mulberry-like or sub-globose, few to many flowered, solitary in leaf axils, or opposite a leaf in woody species, several arranged in umbels terminal on branches, pedunculated, or rarely sessile. Calyx semi-globose or conical, fused below, annular above, apex truncate; corolla white, funnelform, salverform or campanulate, tube as long as or much longer than limb, throat densely hairy or glabrous. Fruit multiple drupes developed from fused flowers and receptacles, ovoid, mulberry-shaped or sub-globose, each drupe with 2-4 pyrenes. Seeds 1, oblong. Worldwide: Species 129 in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Zambia: 2 taxa. |
