Small trees or shrubs, with rigid bristles. Branches 4-gonous. Leaves opposite, subentire. Flowers 4-merous, pedicellate, 2-bracteate, arranged in terminal panicles, produced before the leaves; bracts caducous. Sepals short, persistent; petals obovate or oblong. Ovary 4-locular, adnate to the receptacle by 8 septa. Fruit a capsule 4-valved. Seeds very numerous, obovoid or subpyramidal with hyaline papillae on the back. Worldwide: Over 40 species in tropical Africa. Zambia: 3 taxa. |
