Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, petiolate; lamina simple or pinnately compound, usually with pitted glands on lower surface. Inflorescence simple or branched racemes, panicles or umbels, axillary or terminal. Flowers 4-6-merous; calyx lobed, imbricate; petals imbricate or contorted, longer than calyx; stamens twice as many as petals. Fruit drupaceous, often compressed. Seed solitary, testa membranous.

Worldwide: Species 40, pantropical and subtropical.
