Description of the genus

Trees, sometimes shrubs, glabrous. Stipules triangular, small, caducous. Leaves alternate, palmately compound; leaflets 3, lateral leaflets with asymmetrical bases, petiole long, portion near rhachis often with glands. Inflorescence at tip of new branches, corymbose racemes. Flower receptacle disc-like, with nectary; sepals 4, greenish, deciduous; petals 4, white, cream or yellow (aging to darker colours). Fruit berry, globose or ellipsoid, drooping. Seeds 25-50, embedded in creamy fetid, or pungent mesocarp.

Derivation of name: 8 species in tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
