Herbs or shrubs, sometimes aquatic; stem weak, terete or angular, hairy. Leaves in opposite pairs, petiolate, base cuneate, apex acute, margins serrate or dentate, hairy. Inflorescence a dense terminal spike, simple or branched with hairs. Calyx campanulate, ciliate, hairy within. Corolla 4-lobed, 3 lobes forming the upper lip, lower lip single-lobed. Fruit of 4 nutlets. Worldwide: 90-100 species mainly in Asia. 2 species in Africa. Zambia: 2 taxa. |
