Annual herbs, erect or procumbent. Leaves opposite, simple, 3-veined from base. Capitula axillary or terminal, small, usually in glomerules but sometimes solitary; involucre with few phyllaries, the outer foliaceous, the inner resembling the paleae and enveloping the marginal achenes; receptacular paleae subtending the internal florets. Ray florets 3–8; disc florets 5–10, with 4 corolla lobes. Fruit achenes of marginal florets ellipsoid, compressed, with winged margins; pappus of 2–3 short awns; achenes of inner florets compressed, wings present or absent, tuberculate on one surface; pappus of 2(–4) awns. Worldwide: 2 species from tropical America, one has become a pantropical weed. Zambia: 1 taxon. |
