Description of the genus

Perennial herbs with spherical corms. Inflorescence an erect or inclined spike. Flowers actinomorphic or zygomorphic, orange, yellow, pink or purple. Tepals united in a perianth tube subequal or c. 2-lipped with the lower three bearing a tooth-like callus. Style 3-branched. Capsules spherical to ellipsoid; seeds numerous per loculus.

Worldwide: 28 species, mostly in South Africa; 2 extending to tropical Africa
