Scapose perennial herbs with tap-roots. Leaves usually runcinate-pinnatifid, confined to a basal rosette. Scapes 1 or more, unbranched, hollow, each bearing 1 capitulum. Receptacle pitted but without scales. Phyllaries 2-seriate; outer spreading or recurved. Florets yellow, often with darker stripes on the outer side. Achenes ± terete, ribbed, muricate or echinate in upper part, with a long slender beak. Pappus of many series of simple rough white hairs. Worldwide: 60 species in temperate areas and South America, some worldwide weeds Zambia: 1 taxon. |
