Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence of several to many racemes, arranged on a central axis. Spikelets 1-several-flowered, laterally flattened, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets. Glumes persistent, membranous, 1-nerved, shorter than the spikelet. Lemmas 3-nerved, obtuse or 2-toothed at the apex, sometimes mucronate, rarely with a short awn.

Worldwide: c. 40 species throughout the tropics and in warm temperate parts of America and Australia
