Annual, diffusely branched, glandular-punctate herbs, not strongly aromatic when bruised. Leaves alternate, sometimes opposite, pinnatisect with filiform lobes; margin entire. Inflorescence a diffuse panicle. Capitula small, distinctly stalked, heterogamous; ray florets female, ligulate; disk florets bisexual. Phyllaries 2-seriate, free; margin hyaline. Achenes narrowly obpyramidal. Pappus of 8 hyaline scales. Derivation of name: after Christian Schkuhr (1741-1811), a German botanist Worldwide: 6 species, native to warm America; S. pinnata a widespread weed Zambia: 1 taxon. |
