Description of the genus

Erect scabrid herb. Leaves opposite or subopposite (inflorescence bracts alternate), scabrid. Inflorescences of lax cymose panicles; also individual capitula may occur in the forks of the branches. Capitula heterogamous, radiate; ray-florets fertile; disk-florets bisexual and fertile. Phyllaries subequal. Receptacular scales folded and enclosing the florets. Ray-florets with a minute (< 2 mm) 2-3-fid ligule. Anther-bases obtuse or sagittate below. Achenes trigonous. Pappus of 2-3 stout barbellate bristles arising from an entire narrow cupule.

Worldwide: 10 species in America, some pantropical weeds
