Annual herbs with stems winged from the decurrent leaf bases. Leaves alternate; margin dentate. Capitula solitary or arranged in loose corymbose panicles. Phyllaries in 1-2 rows. Receptacle without scales. Capitula radiate (in ours); ray florets female, yellow; disk florets bisexual, fertile, 5-lobed, also yellow. Achenes cylindric, ribbed; pappus of 2 rows of scales; outer broad, obovate, membranous; inner narrower, longer and serrulate; or (in C. angolensis) pappus reduced to a minute annular rim. Worldwide: 6 species in tropical Africa and Madagascar Zambia: 2 taxa. |
